Today's mechanical engineer must be soundly educated in the mechanics of solids and fluids, thermodynamics and heat transfer, the science of materials, and the principles and techniques of mechanical engineering design.
In studying mechanical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, students and faculty work side by side on concerns in energy conservation and machine design, manufacturing, instrumentation, environmental control and biomechanics.
The B.S. in Mechanical Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

- BS/MS Program in Engineering
This program provides MEMS students with an opportunity to plan a coordinated five-year program of studies leading to both the BS and MS degrees.
The program requires a total of 144 units and normally takes five years to complete. However, interested students capable of carrying heavier loads or utilizing one or two summers for academic work may complete the program in less than five years.
The program is open to students who earn at least a B average during their sophomore and junior years.
Students who wish to enter the program should apply during the second semester of their junior year. Approval of the department chairman and advisor are required.
